The start of school is quickly approaching, for some it has already started. This can be a joyous time for many families, especially if it is the very first day of school for a child or an adolescent going off to college. Families are experiencing mixed emotions during this time. It is to hold in the sense of pride, sadness and fear.

It is important to remember the family functions as a unit, but each person needs their own space and activities. Over the summer, families may have had some fun times, but September marks the beginning of a new season and when many of these individual activities begin. Some children may be sad or fearful the first day of school; this could be a child going to a new school, attending school for the first time, or leaving for college.

Here are some suggestions to help the family get through this emotionally difficult time:

  • Talk about what can be expected at the school (i.e. people, places, objects, etc.)
  • Discuss what happens after school: this could be family activities or who will pick the child up. For an adolescent heading to college, discussing breaks, and family visitation may help.
  • Reminiscing about the times the family had together over the summer: talking about the activities and identifying what everyone’s favourite experience was.
  • Discuss what you, the parent, will be doing throughout the day. This can help the child understand that they may not be missing out on “fun activities”.

Welcome back to school!

Family is the basis of our lives. Being part of a family is rewarding in many ways. If you feel you need support with events that have occurred in the family, please consider seeking professional help for it.
